mixtape - giveaway monday #2

This weeks giveaway is a "Saucy Apron" pattern courtesy of Made By Miffy. Lou from Made By Miffy lives life in FULL COLOUR and this shows in everything she does. So the question for the week is:
Q What is the best thing you could cook up in a saucy apron?
Leave your answer in the comment section of this post and we will announce the winner next Saturday June 6, good luck!!

ABOUT MADE BY MIFFY (as told directly from Lou hereself)
Miffy is my nickname - comes from my porn star name - remember that game back in the 90s? First pet and street name? Mine was Miffy Devon. Cool. I get my inspiration and best business advice from Dr Seuss... "If you never did you should, these things are fun and fun is good." and "Today was good, today was fun. Tomorrow is another one!" There's something in those for all of us don't you think?!
I have started a group called www.apron-nation.ning.com where peeps can post pics of aprons, share apron tutorials, participate in apron swaps and competitions, etc. It is just kicking off but welcoming all helpers so we can 'take over the world, one kitchen at a time"

****
This week is dedicated to all the QLD peeps! Brisbane is so god damn supportive of mixtape I have decided to feature QLD crafters all week. Justine

mixtape mashup #11 MAY 09(D)

Well winter is just around the corner and I have a mountain of crafty projects I want to do and some that are already on the go.

CRAFT ACTION:
Firstly I am going to make a pair of knickers from gemma's pattern
Speaking of making underwear, Amy Karol makes the most rockin' under garments and I just purchased her latest mailorder and will endeavour to do issue 9's mailout and also issue 10 which is all about paper cutting. Issue 9 of mixtapezine features the colourful Tina Tarnoff who is a paper cut artist amongst other things.
I got my latest copy of the sweetest little zine called Crafty Leftovers - it is one very, very special zine.

Blog of the week : Myrtle & Eunice

COMMUNITY:
I am off to RRR on Monday morning to talk to the grapevine chicks about mixtape. In our first ever issue Kylie wrote an article on the community cup. The community cup is a footy match between broadcasters and musicians, and has become an iconic Melbourne event and a celebration of the city's vibrant musical and community broadcasting cultures. And it's all for a good cause!!

I run a fortnightly stitching night at my local fabric store and Nichola has just started a monthly Burda get together at the new Tessuti store that has opened here in Flinders Lane. We all know how popular Brown Owls are and I'd like to know about your sewing group. I am getting some things together for an article for mixtape.
Please email me and tell me about your art/craft/stitching /knitting group:
submissions.mixtapezineATgmailDOTcom

Issue 9 has a couple of articles about community spirit - craftivism and Handmade Help. I've just watched collectors and they had a segment about peeps that are collecting tea cups to deliver to fire victims, I love that.

MUSIC/SCREEN:
We bought a digital set top box a few weeks ago and man am I loving ABC2. Spectacle, Elvis Costello with ... is on as I am writing this, GOOD STUFF!!

The little lady and I went and saw Yo Gabba Gabba today here in Melbourne at the Palais Theatre. It was all I hoped it would be except for the fact that I was hoping the guest muso was going to be Chris Cheney and instead we got Robert Mills...

Have a great weekend! and don't forget that Issue 9 is now available for sale.
Also the winner of our very first weekly giveaway will be announced here on the mixtape blog tomorrow morning and the next giveaway will start from Monday June 1.

Monday, May 25, 2009

Issue 9 is HERE!!

Issue 9 arrived today and what a beauty it is! (if I may say so myself)

Here is a sneak peak:

I will be posting all the pre-sold issues today/tomorrow. I will be dropping of copies to all our Melbourne stockists tomorrow.
This Sunday mixtape will be having a stall at the Emerging Writers Festivals -Page Parlour where I will be selling Issue 8 (I have a few left) and Issue 9.
Melbourne peeps I will be on the grapevine RRR Monday June 1 at 11am taking about Issue 9.

Thanks TO EVERYBODY who makes this zine happen.

Respect
Justine

I tell you between reading Russell Brand's Booky Wook and listening to Jarvis Cocker - I feel like I am drowning in hedonism.. - I like to balance it out with a bit of quilting...

mixtape - giveaway monday #1

Over a decade ago a handsome British boy and an Ohio lass met and fell madly in love at first site in a sleepy university town. The boy was a classically trained master carpenter and the girl a writer with a bit of wanderlust. They worked together creatively through the years on many projects involving woodworking as they restored and remodeled homes together. The boy taught his love about trees on their land in the country and how to use power tools and the girl read poems to him while they worked. They started a journey of following their bliss and eventually brought two wee ones into the world and began creating wooden toys for them. They decided to share these wee wooden toys with the world and Little Alouette, LLC was born over hot steaming mugs of cocoa in the winter of 2007.

This weeks giveaway is Harper the Hippo Teething Toy!
and the question you need to answer to go int the draw to win him is:
How can you start a renaissance of lovely in your life?
Leave a comment and the winner will be notified here on the blog next Saturday May 30.

grandmothers

Hello crafty people,

So, although this might sound like a rather macabre way to begin a blog, I have no grandmothers, that is, they are both in heaven.

When my last grandmother passed away I had this great urge to hold onto all of her old books, magazines, fabrics, boxes and bags that she hadn’t opened for years. My family just wanted to send it all to Vinnies or dump it at the tip, but I made the journey to my home town to pick it all up, along with some kitsch 60’s kitchen items, never used clothes, shoes and glowmesh bags. Do all grandmothers have unworn clothes and accessories stockpiled for the next Great Depression? At the time I wasn’t particularly crafty so it was strange that I needed it. It has all been sitting in my shed getting damp and mildewy for a while now. I haven’t quite had the space, nor the time to go through it. Perhaps it was just the comfort of having it there that made me keep it. But today I decided I needed some fabric and I went out into the shed…

Here I discovered a nest of craftiness created over a lifetime of 94 years. Piles of fabric, patterns, wool, thimbles and the biggest bunch of knitting needles I have ever seen. Along with their collections of unused clothes, do all grandmothers have these nests of crafty heritage hidden in their houses? I feel like I am now creating one of my own, buying bits of fabric I have no idea what to do with, or ribbon I ‘may’ use one day.

So, this blog I dedicate to my grandmother’s and to all grandmother’s for having the time, patience and skill to be so wonderfully crafty. You have bestowed in your grandchildren everywhere a creative crafty soul that they must flaunt every day. So Grandmothers, thank you for leaving me the remnants of your nest for inspiration.

I am using some of the very old lovely fabric in the buttons I’m designing for Mix Tape. Keep an eye out for them!

Here are some pics of my grandmother’s things to get you reminiscing and inspired!

lovely old book.

p.s... Just thought I’d mention...

For all of you in Melbourne, I’m assuming you have seen the Craft City Melbourne blog spot? It is a ‘directory of local faves’, revelling crafty secrets from around the suburbs and letting us know of up coming events! It’s a beautiful and informative blog; if you haven’t been there do take a little trip over.

7 things that make us awesome

The crazy Ginger from Ink&Spindle has tagged mixtape for an awesome blog award.
The deal is that we list 7 things that make us awesome, then tag 7 blogs we love and on it goes...

#1 I sing all the time and love to dance (in private), I can laugh at myself! We constantly have music/radio playing in the house. Our little lady is definately a product of her environment!

#2 I like to think people can trust me with stuff. I am a good listener.

#3 I love seeing people doing what they love and shining as a result.

#4 Red shoes rule the world oh and so does red hair...

#5 I find quilting so very relaxing. Binding especially. Little hexagons even more so and hand applique.

#6 There is nothing else in Australia quite like mixtape and I feel so proud. Proud of all the contributors and readers that keep the wheels turning. I love that is it has a worldwide circulation. It takes the on-line craft community to raise mixtape.

#7 Man this is hard! um I love that most of the time I have good judgement and therefore have beautiful friends (which I am very slack with keeping in touch with).

OK 7 awersooooooome peeps I am passing this onto:

Kylie
Cher
Megan
Shannon
Nikki
Simmone
&
Jenny

What is mixtape?

WHAT IS MIXTAPE??? I often get asked this question.
Well my dear friend Simmone summed it up from the get go way back this time two years ago:

mixtape is a maga(ZINE)
a collision of craft, eco-cool and pop culture kitsch!

Crafty, DIY, living simple (trying), Eco Awareness, Art, Life, Loves, Music, Inspiration, Community...
mixtape is essentially a craft magazine that profiles artists and crafters. We have a tutorial in each issue, we review books, zines, music. We write about popular culture. It is written by like minded souls who want to share their opinions and knowledge. mixtape is written for a niche market, it is not mainstream. I get to choose everything that is put in the mag and we are independently published. It is all done (besides the printing) from our home here in Melbourne in amongst trying to raise a family and keep the house clean. We are about to launch Issue 9 and the reason we have been able to continue to grow/evolve is because YOU get behind us and support our passion. This zine is about a lifestyle choice, all encompassing - I love to create, I love music and my family mean the world to me. I love reading and hearing all about YOUR life as well. Hopefully that's what each and every issue of mixtape does, lets you know that you are not alone and that you are part of a community of like minded people.
My motto is to "Live life in FULL COLOUR!"

You are going to see some changes in the way mixtape looks by the end of this year. I'm doing a bit of forward planning and want to keep you in the loop.
Got any suggestions? Things you like/hate about our zine? Now is your chance to have a say.
Please feel free to email me directly mixtapezine@gmailDOTcom

Inspiration Boards

Inspiration is all around, you just have to look.

True hey? Inspiration is all around but I find my-self often getting overwhelmed with all the loveliness in the world. Firstly I am a magazine/book/blog junkie and a fabric whore.
Every now and then I need to wipe the slate clean. I have done that today with my "Inspiration Board". Do you have an inspiration board? Tell me about it!

Crafty love:

Tracy is one of my favourite reads from a couple of years back

Listening:
Have you heard the new Jarvis Cocker song called Angela? It's a ripper.
I'm currently listening to Wig Wam Bam.

Reading:

Bags for the People

Bags for the People is a non-profit organization that provides people with a sustainable alternative to plastic bags, while spreading awareness about sustainability, community and creative activism.

Bags for the People began with three friends who worked at the Union Square Farmers Market in New York City and wanted to make a positive impact on the exorbitant use of plastic bags that they witnessed each and every day at the market. In an effort to curb plastic bag usage, Bags for the People began doing high school bag-building workshops, parties, and partnerships with arts and environmental organizations in the local community, building the bags they give out for free at the market and beyond.

Please visit the website to learn more about the progress of the organization, the many programs and events and how you can help reduce the use of plastic bags.

a first hello from the intern!

So hello!

My name is Manderlee and I’m the intern for Mixtape (It’s so exciting to be able to say that)! I’m living in wintry Melbourne but my roots lie deep in the farming land of rural NSW. I am studying a mixture of things at University, but mostly graphic design and photography. My passions are art, design, photography, craft, the environment, hand made/second hand/old cloths and bits and pieces and my little veggie match. I’m going to be blogging about my different eco, craft and pop culture experiences, both in the real world and the virtual world, that I think all of the Mixtape/crafty lovely family might like to know about!

I can’t wait to get knee deep in the world of Mixtape!

Love x

lack of post action

Please excuse the lack of post action. My camera is living at a friends place at the moment and it has left me picturless. I've just borrowed my husbands fancy number (which I HATE using) to take some pictures of the gorgeous mail I received this morning.

I had admired these pencils along time ago and never got around to ordering them. I met the AMAZING Ms Red Felt Flower at the show and ordered them directly from her. I was a bit shy/blown away meeting Ms RFF as hers was one of the blogs I read years and years ago, so she is rock'n'roll royalty to me! The attention to details and the simplicity in all her work is just divine.
I am constantly reminded though that we are all in this together and there is mutual admiration flying around all over the place!

I met with my intern (!!) this morning for a coffee on Greville St. We bounced around ideas and set some things in motion. Manderlee will post a couple of times a week here on the mixtape blog. Please make her welcome!

Issue 9 is just around the corner. It goes to print next Monday!! Pre-order here.

New Retailer - Rocking Horse Records - Brisbane, thanks Olivia

I don't even know where to start with wrapping up mixtapes Brisbane trip to the show.
Here are just some of the peeps that passed though and left a mark (I know I have not covered everyone, please leave me a comment and remind me):

Samantha
Michelle
Catherine

Louise
my new besties and this amazing lady and always a pleasure to hang Kristen Doran (DD) and Sandra from Winterwood, my partners in craft.
You know what I'm just going to link to Helens posts 'cause she seems to have it all covered.

Basically the craft community in Brisbane is pretty unbelievable. Again just like in Melbourne, I feel honoured to be a part of it. Thanks for putting on a great show Brisbane.

mixtape mashup #8 MAY 09

mixtape and Whipup's joint venture, we both share our ideas, cool links and general goings on.

Like Kathreen from whipup I missed a week of writing the mixtape mashup. The week prior I had spent in Brisbane working my mixtape magic at the Stitches & Craft show. Talking to people for 8 hours a day takes it's toll on you after 5 days! Anyhow I felt like a week was needed to recharge my batteries and now here I am back and ready to play!
One of my customers at the show actually found out about mixtape via whip up - so it's nice to know someone is reading!

CRAFT/ART:
Madeline Stamer who designed Issue 8's cover is having an exhibition in Bendigo - read more about it here.
I now have an intern! can you believe it?!! Her name is Manderlee and part of her job is to look around this wonderful online craft community and report back her cool findings. Her first photographs for mixtape will appear in Issue 10 in an article on the Threadden girls.
For this week my two top finds are:
PedroSprout - Michelle's little baby shoes are KILLERS
madebymaisie - Catherine's dolls are beautifully made and I love that they all have their own names/personalities

MUSIC:
mixtape is now an official business subscriber to my most favorite station here in Melbourne town RRR.
The family and I spent Friday afternoon in Basement Disc's seeing The Wagons play live, have you heard them? Well their song "Love me like I love you" is hands down the song of the year for me.

BOOKS:
I'm currently reading the charismatic Russell Brand's - My Booky Wook
I've also pre-ordered Soulemamas and Amy Carols upcoming crafty numbers.
I popped into the AMAZING Metropolis Books yesterday and they are down to ONE copy left of mixtapezine 8, YAY!!

I also purchased a children's book called, "Rosie's Walk" for a birthday present. Rosie's Walk was one of MY favourites as a kid, do you remember it?

DON'T FORGET ..... Issue 9 is available for pre-sale NOW

Home!

I said goodbye to sunny Brisbane late yesterday afternoon.
I had such a good time but felt VERY home sick yesterday.

Any how it's just a quick post to let you know that I have just added the last 40 of Issue 8 back into the store. You can also PRE-ORDER ISSUE 9 here.
I have so much to write about and I will just as soon as I can make a dent in the paper work on my desk and answer emails.

Thanks Brisbane for your friendliness and hospitality.

Brisbane Stitches DAY 3

We we are half way through the Stitches & Craft Show. It takes alot out of you talking and smiling for 8 hours a day! Again I met a heap of wonderful people and one of them was Sarah with these beautiful swallows:

I met a husband a wife team who are both in a roller derby league here in Brisbane.
Shannon who is a long time fan of mixtape stopped by to say hi and chat. I noticed here tattoo and took a photo of it. Shannon also makes wonderful things from vintage fabric.

Sublime Stitching are represented at the show in a BIG WAY at their very own Craft Bar.

You can buy sublime patterns here from the show from amitie textiles (STALL 11) and I have a few of the Russian Doll & Cute Little Heads patterns for sale. I hope to meet loads of wicked people today at the show. It's 7.39am and I best get in the shower and get myself together for a busy Saturday at the S&C Show.
