Slow food

Somehow, god knows, I was blessed with culinary skills. My mothers’ cooking was unadventurous, as my fathers idea of food is meat and three veg. So we hardly strayed from that grounding point, occasionally I’d see a sheet of pasta or wave of soup. Moving out of
home gave me a new lease on food. I was able to be a vegetarian, much to my father’s disgust and disapproval, and find my culinary feet.

This week i decided to send a care package to my siblings. Sort of like what wives and girlfriends sent their men in the war. My parents are away and my brother’s culinary skills range so far as putting hot water on noodles, and my sisters are as good as causing a house fire from letting the oil burn when cooking prawn crackers. I made them a delightfully child inspired rocky with red frogs and marsh mellows and Anzac biscuits to keep them from eating one another. The utter delight i had from hearing them munching on the goodies down the phone line was enough to make my heart burst.

Have you ever heard of the slow food revolt? It's
'a revolt against the fast pace forced on us by industrial civilization, specifically fast-food culture'. I guess It is part of why i love cooking so much, not some much because I'm a lady. Go and read up about it, it's quiet inspiring.

Some of my favourite recipe books and blog’s:

Gourmet Vegetarian by Jane Price- Really hearty easy vegetarian food, this is where i get most of my dinner party ideas from.

Butter, Sugar, Flour- A cooks book of baking- Everything you could ever want to bake from anzac biscuits to Peacan and Coffe Biscotti

The Cupcake Deck By Elinor Klivans
- Cupcakes that lo
ok too sexy to eat.

Vegpod.com - A blog about vegan/vegetarianism and it's ups and downs

pennylanekitchen - For pictures to inspire your inner chef.

Scones and Tea on Sunday

Also, I’ve decided, it’s okay to eat the whole cake if you baked the whole cake.

Chocolaty love from the Intern.

win - win - win

****
Ok so the new giveaway is soulemama's new book "Handmade Home" (we will talk about it more later in the week)

...Filled with thirty-three projects made by reusing and repurposing materials, all of the items here offer a practical use in the home. From picnic blankets made out of repurposed bed sheets to curtains made out of vintage handkerchiefs, these projects express the sense of making something new out of something old as a way to live a more financially pared-down and simple life; lessen our impact on the earth; connect to the past and preserve a more traditional way of life; and place value on the work of the hands. Also included are projects that children can help with, allowing them to make their own special contribution to the family home...

So I'm going to run this comp for the next TWO weeks - until Sunday September 6. All you need to do is write in (the comments) and tell us what Family means to you - and why you should win this book.

Kylie, who has written for mixtape from the beginning, has started Roller Derby. A new team has started here in Melbourne in the South.

Sydney

Fi and I flew into Sydney this afternoon. We were picked up at the airport by a very dear mentor of mine Jenny. We are staying with Jen this week while we are here for the Stitches & Craft Show. We drove through Newtown and then caught the train into the city and went straight to Kinokuniya - blown away with all the goodness - resisted temptation to buy 1000's of $ worth and just purchased one Japaneese Cath Kidston that came with a cool little bag. After dark Jenny took us for a ride over the Harbour Bridge to check out some sights - Sydney is a very pretty town.

Issue 10 has been posted today! - all before I drove to the airport.
Subscribers, retailers and buyers - all gone. Please feel free to write on in and give me some feedback would ya? Sime and I busted our chops to push this issue forward a month so we could have it ready for Stitches. We printed 1500 again and I have 600 to sell in Sydney - how cool would it be to sell out whilst here!? Pop down to the show - it's on this Wednesday until Sunday and there are over 40 indie business in the incubator section --- oh my I can hardly wait... I am soooo pumped to hang with the peeps I already know and looking forward to meeting lots & lots & lots of new crafty souls.

Oh and thanks to Sime who is playing Mr Mum this week while I am up here - you are a good man I tell ya!!

Hello lovelies,

So yesterday afternoon I was packaging and sta
mping the many subscriptions to be sent out of the new issue of Mixtape! I was double tasking by entertaining Molly while Justine worked. Molly traced my foot and my hand and drew a lovely tree and a puppy for me, she has so much energy it's inspiring. My aunts and uncles call me Milly Molly Mandy, is it meant to be?

This morning I was the Mixtape courier, dropping of the fresh new issue of Mixtape to the lovely places that stock it. I couldn’t resist a cupcake from Little Cupcakes in Degraves Street on the way back to the car park from Sticky. I read a few cute zine’s in Sticky and was inspired to write more of my thoughts down. Then off I couriered to Greville Street Bookstore where I could no longer resist the purchase of Curvy. I’ve been meaning to buy it for months, I'm in awe of all the ladies in it. It is such an inspiration and I was particularly excited to see some of the ladies whose work I had seen at Gallery 696 in it. In the bookstore I was listening in to a conversation between the bookstore owner and some customers. They wanted a book about art deco because they were redecorating.

‘oh we didn’t realise there was an art deco exhibition on last year, is it an annual thing’

my jaw dropped

‘no it was the winter show at the NGV last year, it changes every year, this year it’s Salvador Dali’

‘Oh we didn’t no about the Dali exhibition’

I almost collapsed in disbelief.

Then I had to remind myself that there are people from all walks of life and that it’s okay for not everyone to be interested in the ‘arts’.
Do you ever listen into other conversation? I’m so terrible, I love listening, I’ll stop listening to my own conversations to listen to complete strangers conversations!

Anyway, anyway, anyway. I hope your Saturday was as lovely as mine. I hope your all enjoying getting Mixtape in the mail or picking it up from all the lovely places that stock it. Chai and bedtime now.

Sending big Saturday Night love from the Intern.

Out of the corner of my eye

I feel in love,
I spotted it out of the corner of my eye as we drove past.
I knew it had to be mine.
It was coming home with me.

So last weekend I hired a trailer and off I drove into the country on a lovely Saturday morning, the sea and the fresh air beckoning me. You see weeks before I had spotted an art deco sideboard in an op-shop out in the country for $30. Even though it had a thick coating of dust and grime I knew that there was incredibly beauty beneath. The thing was too heavy for the little lovely old op-shop ladies and myself to carry, so we had to rouse up the help of some builder’s next door. Copious amounts of cardboard, rope and tarpaulin later and I was heading back down the highway sideboard in tow. Miraculously I got the thing out of the trailer on my own and into the shed. I sat in front of it and admired its beauty and I soon noticed a little Australian made symbol whilst pursing its cupboards.

“Australian made huh?” thought I, “this must be pretty old”.
Isn’t that a sad thought?

One thing that spurs my spirit within the whole craft revolution is the Australian made aspect.

I met Suzanne from the Lumina Fibre Arts Gallery in Melbourne, an absolutely amazing women who I will talk about more in the future, who has endeavored successfully to get her shops products certified Australian Made and Owned. Her shop stocks over 200 local crafters and artists work and is a true kaleidoscope of skill and range. The sneaky bonus is that it is all made in Australia. How lovely for the soul, environment, Australian economy and for our local talent.

So this week endeavor to only buy Australian Made and Owned. It’s pretty hard. Especially when grocery shopping. Goodluck!

surprises!

I turned on my computer this morning and went straight to bloglines. I have not check blogs all week so I had lots of goodness to swim in! Firstly - a store I would like to visit in person, "Fancy Tiger Crafts" features crafters each week and to my surprise I knew this weeks Better Know A Crafter! Jenny Rosalky is my mother in laws best friend and she is also very dear to me. Sime and I got married in Jenny's back yard - and it was Jenny who slapped me (literally) when I arrived to walk down the isle ( to marry Sime) and was so nervous about walking through 100 friends I said to Jen - I CAN'T DO THIS - we should have eloped! Anyhow Jenny worked her magic and off I went - and the rest is history!
So it was the coolest to find her smiley face starring back at me this morning.

Another dear friend of mine has a sweet little article written about her.

Also Kirsty who NEVER fails to impress me has made the coolest spool holder:

Listening:Willie & the Wheel
Reading: Tupperware manuals
Watching:Entourage S6 - I looove Ari

Sydney Peeps - I'm looking forward to meeting you all in a weeks time :) Seriously!! I love to chat (and listen)! Come past, introduce yourself and hangout. You just gotta watch Handmade Nation while you are at the show - 'cause it's the only way your gonna get to see it! (well until it comes out on dvd).
Issue 10 is now being printed YIPPPPEEE!! and I need to hem the mixtape tea-towels and we are all good to go.

Gratitiude

If I don't have gratitude, I don't have nothin'.

Monday morning kinder drop off and time to clean the house from the week-end madness.
I decided to conquer the task of matching up cd covers with their discs and found a cd that made me cry. Cry with gratitude.
A very, very good friend of ours lost his wife to cancer a couple of years ago, she was only 37. She knew she was dying and decided to make a cd of her life to be handed out at the wake.
It's a beautiful mix - fun, loving, happy and upbeat just like she was. It got me thinking about the things that get me down - the little trivial shitty things that in the scheme of things DON'T MATTER ONE BIT. So after listening to the cd and having a good cry I have decided to have an attitude of gratitude as often as possible, celebrate life and the people I choose to share it with. Thanks to everyone who crosses my path - what a wild ride life is hey?

Turn, Turn, Tun - The Byrds
To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose, under heaven A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap A time to kill, a time to heal A time to laugh, a time to weep To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose, under heaven A time to build up,a time to break down A time to dance, a time to mourn A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together...

Melbourne International Film Festival

Sime and I are off to Fed Square tonight to see, We're Livin' On Dog Food. I was 14 when Dogs In Space was on at the cinemas. My cousin snuck me in to the cinema to see it - I thought I was the luckiest girl alive. I have the soundtrack, the R rated black cover soundtrack and I thought Saskia Post was the COOLEST chick ever, and the music, the music - man I felt connected.

It's been many a year since I have actually seen Dogs In Space, I do have it on VHS somewhere in the cupboard and I have my fancy DVD copy on pre-order at my local music store.

Have you been to any movies at the Melbourne International Film Festival? Or want to tell me what your favorite movie is?
