mixtape and whip up do a dance #4

[

Today I am working from home - I have a sick little boy and have been
up and down with him all night - I slept in the spare bed in his room
so I could pass the sick bucket to him when needed. This morning I
woke with a neck cramp, chickens at the back door, a warm cat and a
lovely cup of coffee. I have also finally started actively using
Twitter, (thought these
quilts on craftster
were amazing) Nicole set up an account for
whipup ages ago and now its actively being monitored - follow whipup on twitter here - read
this article at croqzine about the benefits of twitter for your

mixtape has just embarked on a joint venture with Whipup. We will both be sharing our ideas, cool links and general goings on.
My aim is to post once a week and give you a "round up" of the week that has been. The post will be put up on the mixtape blog and also on the Whipup blog.
What is mixtape? click here to find out

The week that was:

Well it's the end of the month and the end of an era for mixtape. We decided a few weeks ago that as of the 31st of March 2009 we would stop printing back issues (1-7). They will however are be avaliable to purchase as a PDF file as of March 31st. What this means is that every issue begining with the current (8) is a collectors item, a one off professional print job!

Did I tell you that mixtape will be at the Stitches & Craft Show in Brisbane from 29 April - 3 May 2009. You just gotta come and check out the incubator section, see handmade nation
and check out the tea cosy revolution. There are still all your traditional stands and the like mixed in with alot of new. I'm looking forward to meeting all the Brissy Style chicks!
***I am looking for people to help me out during the show just for a few hours each day, please email me at feedback.mixtapezineATgmailDOT com if you are interested and want to find out more***

zines and books

Susy from NSW stocks mixtape and has just opened a big cartel store, check it!

I came across this sweet looking zine and organised a trade. They came in the mail yesterday and I was not disappointed. Full of great music articles, nicely designed and I love the blue paper. The girls sum it all up better than I could:

Shebang is a light blue homemade zine crammed with music features, travel guides, artist profiles, craft tutorials and any other fancies that catch our eye! We believe that the simple things in life should be celebrated and shared; the new favourite record you've found for pennies in a charity shop, the cake recipe your nan passed on or the gig last night that made your heart skip...

I also picked up a copy of Meet Me At Mikes new book. A few years ago I got The Crafters Companion and devoured it, it was so nice to see bloggers I read now in print. Well that's how I feel about Mikes book and the 26 crafters that submitted their work, except this time I know most of them or have worked with them in some form.
So to sum it all up, "Hallelujah!! Praise the Craft Community". Art/Craft/lowbrow/punk/ whatever your scene, it is all encompassing for me. I am a part of our craft community and I am proud. I know seeing "Handmade Nation" made me get tears in my eyes and wanna fly the flag!!!!
You know there has been a bit of discussion about the whole art/craft thing which I choose not to get involved in. I can sew, just sweet basic stuff, I can write but I am not a writer (spelling and grammar help!!) but the thing is I give it a go. I love stuff, I love sharing stuff so maybe that's why mixtape works? I don't know? but my point is we only have one chance at this life so "Life, Be In It!! There is so much good out there and that's what I focus on ;)

weekend knitting

What a fabulous book! It's not often I can start a book review like this, but it isn't often that a book I am given is so filed to the brim with things I love. Fantastic projects and beautifully styled, the contributor list for Melanie Falick's lovely book Weekend Knitting is the who's who of knitting designers including favourites of mine such as Veronik Avery, Debbie Bliss, Ann Budd, Teva Durham and Norah Gaughan (to name but a few).

Featuring 50 projects the book is much more substantial than many pattern books, and even includes a few recipes and thoughts about knitting in a non-project way. The projects are divided into three sections and each features projects that are both small and large, complex and simple.

The home and hearth section has some great twists on simple ideas like these washclothes in the shape of happy flowers.

And I am very taken with these game boards and the knitted draw string bag for keeping the playing pieces safe. What a great gift they would make, and so quick and easy to knit. I think the checkers board may be making a debut in time for Amy's birthday. There is a Flickr group of projects from the book and I notice the lap rug from this section has been very popular.

The next part of the book, body and soul, has adult garments that again range from the big and complex to the small and simple. In particular I love that the projects explore interesting stitches and textures, like this poncho - just love that stitch!
And this very simple scarf uses the brilliant technique of alternating colours between the purl and knit stitches in a rib. There's a neck warmer and hat using the same method and I am just in love with them.

I like these socks too, particularly the wavy picot top edge

By the time I reached the charm of children section I was thinking I had quite enough ideas, but there is plenty to get excited about here too. There are some lovely blankets and garments, but I was especially delighted by this hat. It may well be enough to get me over my aversion to colourwork! And if you aren't so taken with love hearts, there's a version with stars too.

But here's the best yet - and they saved it till the very last project in the book. How cute cute cute are they!

So this is a great book, with exciting projects for both beginners and expereinced knitters. It has an excellent range of types of projects too with homewares, toys, pullovers, scarves, socks, baby wear and all photographed in wonderful warm and natural hues. I am sure it will become a classic in the vein of Last Minute Knitted Gifts and will get good use over many years.

FlipZOO is a project conceived, first of all, for don't let you forget that some of our animal friends are today jeopardizing their existence because of human behavior.

We're increasing our planet pollution every day, using plastic, not recycling our goods, letting the produtcts travel for days from the other side of the earth before they'll be used.

We are growing lazier and lazier in making things, we want them ready to use without "building" anything ourselves.

I believe that DIY goods is a small but helping way to protect our "nest earth" having fun too.

FlipZOO papercafts propose themselves in all this different meanings: they are here to remind you we are losing some animals species, they want to make you descover DIY satisfaction, they want you to decrease consume in useless plastic toys that doesn't stimulate your imagination.

NEWS FLASH!!!

Ok Peeps! This is where it's at.
After a long hard think about this and advise from some WICKED WOMEN, I have decided to stop printing back issues (1,2,3,4,5,6&7) as of the end of this month (March 2009). They will however be available as a PDF download for $5 each. I have a number of reasons for doing this:
Popular demand!! Yep your feedback.
Ink prices have gone through the ROOF.
It will make all future Issues "Collectors Items". By that I mean I will do one professional print run of every Issue (starting with Issue 8) and once they have sold out that is it! No more, no less!!
So you have until the end of the month to purchase PRINTED back issues if you are super keen to have the whole set. Issues 1-7 will be available as PDF's to PURCHASE early next week.

Thanks for your understanding.

Whipup and mixtape do a dance #2

Whipup has a new feature category - they are the two posts that appear for a bit longer than usual in the mushroom box at the top of the page - you can check out all the feature archives here and they will also show up in your feeds too. Some recent features have included: this book review for bags and skirts by Korean designers; artist Yuken Teruya's beautiful toilet paper rolls; book review Knitting for good by craftivism guru Getsy Greer; How to spring clean your sewing machine by Weeks Ringle of Fun quilts; how to extend the life of kids clothes by Betz White; and the mixtape mashup - winners of the mixtape comp will be announced next week - thank you all for entering.

Anyway you all have been super creative - I am inspired just by looking: sugarless eggs pattern at popknits; photocuffs how-to at photojojo; sparks baby quilt tutorial by Alyssa; zakka pincushion; maths in quilting; child's artwork tote; plastic covered placemats; buttons; nifty book binding tutorial; make your own cleaning tools: loved the organza flowers: and the knitted fish pattern; and don't forget its march mending month at craftzine; this quilted bowl was beautiful; and the refashioned shirt dress was pretty special too.

[And an aside: My brother Jonathan is a fully fledged IT nerd - and thank goodness for that - he has been doing some background stuff for me on whipup. As a favour he has asked me to post about an online application he has developed - its in beta testing mode at the moment - to manage your finances online. Its a nifty program and I think its an excellent idea for individuals and small business owners to keep a handle on finances... My brother is looking for beta testers right now - and yes it is all free...] Find out more here - how to sign up.

And don't forget to tune in for the Weekend sewing blog tour by Heather Ross - Heather will be here 16 March for an illustrated sewing demo [oh uhm thats today].

So much to do - get craftin'

Shoot! I am a day late with my post. Please forgive me as I have spent the past FIVE days at the Melbourne Showgrounds as part of the Stitches & Craft show in the incubator section. What a whirlwind. I got to hang out with the most excellent bunch of creative, inspiring artists and crafters. I got to meet readers, retailers and by far my most favorite Faythe Levine. Handmade Nation made it's debut at the Stitches & Craft Show. I can't say enough good about the movie, I cried I loved it so much. Ms Levine is a kindred spirit and it is definitely the highlight of my year so far meeting her and seeing the movie. You may have to wait until it comes out on DVD to see it now but in the meantime you can buy the book which is FANTASTIC ALSO!

I am still coming down off the high of the past week. I have a lot of paper work to catch up on and lots of emails to attend to.
mixtape will be at the Stitches & Craft show in Brisbane April 29 - May 3 and we look forward to meeting and hanging out with the brisstyle chicks! and all who care to come and say hello!!

One of the fun things I did at the Melbourne show was write on the "Post A Craft Secret" wall. I wrote, "I pretty much never finish anything I start"!!! Yep it's true. Do you have a Craft Secret? Do tell.

Check out my S&C shots here. The displays were beautiful and the vision for the new look show is second to none.

Whipup and mixtape do a dance

Hooray for collaboration and cross promotion!!

Kathreen from Whipup will be doing a weekly roundup of all the crafty happenings at whipup - and I will be doing the same thing called "mixtape mash" over at Whipup. We have just finished a 2 day competiton over at Whipup for giveaways of the HOT OFF THE PRESS Issue 8. I will be choosing winners over the weekend.

Welcome to March - and some seasonal changes are in the air. Whipup
has a new feature section at the top of the page how do you like it?
This is where some stories will be able to stay for a little longer -
competitions and features and roundups will appear.

Last week on whipup I was drooling over spoonflower
fabric designs - and this week my fabric designs arrived in the mail.
I did a few different designs - the most successful I thought were the
kids drawings - together we scanned in a few of their drawings and
played around with colour and flipping them around and tiling them in
photoshop - here are our results. I also have been having fun with
vintage maps - and like the outcomes of these too.

The results of last weeks fabric
giveaway
are in and the two winners of $25 voucher from this and
that from Japan etsy store are Jesselyn and Monica T - winners have
been contacted via email - thank you all for entering - our current
competition is a chance to win a copy
of the latest mixtape zine - enter here.

Did you see the grumpasaurus
knitting pattern
and the video tutorial on Norwegian Purl
or how to do french
knots
- we also featured a fun shamrock
knitted hat
and the mother bear
knitted bears project.
Make sure you get yourself some craft
therapy
if you feeling edgy. Did you miss the sew,
mama, sew fat quarter month
.

Lots more tutorials of course as usual here are just a few: hand
carved stamp tutorial
- there is a whole series so be sure to
check back with this one : the modern sampler quilt
along
looks fantastic - and with a regular update and very
detailed tutorial this is another one to keep checking back in on : buttercup
bag free pattern
: homemade
goodie bags
: flower
quilting block patterns
.

So much to do - get craftin'

Thank you to Nicole
and happy crafting everyone!

Stitches & Craft countdown 4 DAYS TO GO!

I lost a few days this week in my countdown to THE SHOW, but I'm back!
Still covered in a mountain of fabric and paperwork but not totally drowning. Look I thrive on stress so I really shouldn't complain...
What have I been doing these past few days? (in between looking after the little lady, my man and running a household).
* Painting frames to put all the mixtape covers in for show display
*Printing back issues
* Filling orders
* Returning emails
* Chasing things up
* Receiving wonderful books to review, which I will do with the help of some friends over the coming month!
*Perle 8ing - I am so glad that this is a weekly thing. Every week I come away from our gathering with renewed enthusiasm.

Martine (and her equally talented husband) who has written for mixtape from the get go has TOTALLY blown me away with this WICKED new fabric range.
Designed & printed in Melbourne by greenolive textiles. It is printed by hand (not mass produced)
Oh my! It surely is the BEST thing in town. I wish you all the best Martine in your fabric adventure. I am SUPER proud to have been your first customer!!

I just wanted to give a sneak peek into what's happening in the world of Uxor for Windows.

It may be the home of Starbucks here but I still love a cup of tea.
