WHO -Regular Writers Page #4

Megan:
I love to write, to take photos, and to make things.  I have little idea of what I am doing in any of these three endeavours, but whatever paths my life has taken me down, I have always come back to writing, taking photos and making things.

megan

Q1.The name of my blog
www.thescentofwater.typepad.com

Q2. What's you craft poison
This changes depending on mood, but knitting and quilting remain my two big loves.

Q3. Two books you can't live without

Just two?  That’s painful, and would probably be a different two depending on which day I answered it.  Today it would be Foods That Fight Cancer by Richard Beliveau and Denis Gingras, which is admittedly a seriously odd choice, particularly given that I neither have cancer nor am a food scientist.  Nevertheless I just love the idea of food as medicine and never get sick of re-reading this book.  My second choice would be a big fat poetry anthology.   Any would do.

Q4. Two CD's that would travel to a desert island with you

My new Natalie Merchant CD, Leave Your Sleep.  She has put 19th century poetry to music and I just love it.  The second would be a mixtape of my favourite angst-ridden ballads, all written in a minor key.  I like my music sad.  I have no idea why.

Q5. Where you like to SURF on the net

Everywhere.  I am a very well travelled surfer.  I keep coming back to see what new lectures are on the TED site every few weeks or so, and the haunt the edges of Flickr, but otherwise I just travel where the waves take me.

Q6 5 things you can't live without
Tea, books, tea, tomatoes, and tea.

Q7  One thing you love about mixtape
Watching this magazine grow over the last few years has been so amazing.  It’s all great, and I have a special love for the concept of ‘ordinary’ people coming together to share their wisdom and creativity with each other.  The covers always rock too.

Craft Books Revisited Part 3 - Readers Digest Complete Guides

Photobucket

I recently pulled my Readers Digest complete guides off the shelf again I had forgotten just how fantastic these books are. They truly are comprehensive guides with excellent and numerous illustrations. They are clearly and simply written and have fantastic step by step instructions to help you learn new techniques and skills.

If you new to sewing or needlework these guides will help answer all those questions that everyone else seems to already know the answer to. They will also provide you with lots of clear examples and help bring you up to speed on terminology and how to use various craft specific gadgets.

These guides have been revised and reprinted numerous times and it is possible to buy copies new. However because they have been reprinted so many times it also means that they regularly turn up in op shops and second hand books stores. They can also be found on Ebay, however the postage can be hefty as they are big heavy books.

WHO -Regular Writers Page #3

October 035

Bianca is an Attention Deficient Crafter, mum to a Smurf and lover of cooking
and baking to make her friends and family feel happy. Named after two of
Bianca's grandparents, Sadieandlance.blogspot.com is a way to keep track
of miscellaneous craft related adventures be they sewing, knitting, crocheting,
cooking or whatever tickles her fancy - most of which are influenced in someway
by Sadie's very crafty hand.

Q1.The name of my blog
Sadieandlance ...it's five years old this year!

Q2. What's your craft poison
I am an Attention Deficient Crafter, so I couldn't possibly pick one. It's
a known phenomenon, you know, I even started an Association for it. I dabble
in many crafts and my favourite changes often. At the moment it's a toss
up between sewing and crochet.

Q3. Two books you can't live without
Anything by Banana Yoshimoto and any of the Harry Potter series.

Q4. Two CD's that would travel to a desert island with you
Oh no, only two? That's not fair, I think I'd have to smuggle my Ipod onto
the island. Alright, I'll choose The Specials, Best Of to encourage happy
dancing and PJ Harvey Stories from the City Stories from the Sea.

Q5. Where you like to SURF on the net
My bloglines still never fails to deliver me endless hours of clicking adventures
and I also love losing myself in Whip Up.

Q6 5 things you can't live without
Family, Friends, good food, music and something crafty to occupy my thoughts
and hands.

Q7 One thing you love about mixtape
I love that mixtape started in Australia. When I first started blogging,
there
wasn't a whole lot of craft blogging happening in Australia so it's exciting
to see influential voices like Mixtape bringing the global craft world together
from an Australian base. Plus that Justine lady, she's one rockin'lady.

NY Baby, NY!

Hows this for awesome?  The brand new Purl Soho Shop in New York - who also happen to be stockist of mixtapezine!!!  One day I'll get there in person, one day!

Kids Issue Action

Tori Higa is a Stationary Designer from the USA.  She kindly donated some of her art for the Kids Issue.  Molly and I made her up today.

I scanned the page and enlarged it to fit on an A4 sheet.   We then printed it out on 200gsm paper and cut the doll and her clothes out.  I think the best thing to do is re-print the clothes on thinner paper so the doll sits upright!

I'm a mum to one hellava gorgeous 11yo girl, and I knit with addiction! I also play roller derby with the newly formed South Sea Roller Derby league, and I'm also a coach and Media Rep, so it keeps me busy beyond belief. I studied Fine Art in my 20's and though I rarely get to work on my own practice any more, I still love going to exhibitions, especially of emerging artists. Music is my lifeblood, the constant thread running through my day, and I couldn't live without 3RRR.

Jitterbug Perfume - Tom Robbins, and Life of Pi - Yann Martel. Both changed and inspired me at critical points along this life-path

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - B-sides& Rarities, and Lucinda Williams - Car wheels on a Gravel Road should cover all moods

Q5. Where you like to SURF on the net
Ravelry is my favourite surf-break cos I can spend hours being taken on new tangents craft-wise and find inspiration every single visit.

Q6 5 things you can't live without
My daughter - the beautiful Lily-girl; my knitting, natch; my skates are almost permanently attached to my feet too, music is ever-present - 3RRR is my soul, and yoga puts that crazy, hectic mess above all into a grounded perspective!

Q7 One thing you love about mixtape
Of course, my editor is #1 ;) but I also love that I have been involved since the first issue and have watched this gem of an amazing idea grow and grow into the fantastic publication it is today. I love that it brings together all types of people and ideas, and that there is something for everyone in each and every issue.

WHO - Regular Writers Page

I have introduced a new page on this here blog - Regular Writers.  I will profile the chicks that write for us each and every issue.

First one is Suzie who made me laugh when she responded to my email by saying
- Is this the equivalent of online nesting?! :-)  I'll get right on it!

suzie one of my regular writers

Sooz works, crafts, mothers, teaches, cooks, designs and hangs out on the internet from her home in Melbourne, Australia. Her sewing and knitting have been known to reach obsessional proportions but luckily she has kids and a job to keep her honest.

Q1.The name of my blog

== soozs big adventure

Q2. What's your craft poison?
== I love quite a few crafts, but sewing would have to be my number one, can't go past it, suck me in every time craft of choice. Knitting would be a close second.

Q3. Two books you can't live without

== the latest Ottobre magazine, a fine balance by Rohinton Mistry

Q4. Two CD's that would travel to a desert island with you
== the happy music mix from last year's CD swap and the K-Tel Music of the 60s, 70s and 80s compendium

Q5. Where you like to SURF on the net
== Can't go past Etsy.com for inspiration and interesting supplies, the new MySewingCircle.com, Ravelry.com, Flickr.com, and a disgusting number of craft blogs and fabric and yarn stores!

Q6 5 things you can't live without
==the stash, the sewing machine, my macbook, my iPod, my tea infuser

Q7  One thing you love about mixtape

==it's totally real! It ditches that airbrushed model, 2 hour beauty routine, corporate global advertising campaign and talks to me about the things I see, eat, do, read, hear and look at everyday.

Mini Quilts have been around for over 100 years, and served a couple of different purposes. They were a fun way for young girls to learn how to sew, sewing simple quilt designs for their dolls. They also were also a great educational tool that mothers and grandmothers could make for their children and grandchildren – these often had letters or motifs appliqued or embroidered onto them. Mini quilts are still made today, as teaching/learning tools and as play things. And now added to these two uses comes a third – as pieces of contemporary art.

In this month of April, WHIP UP will be showcasing various artists who work with mini quilts as their main medium, as well as makers and quilters who just happen to make mini quilts because they can, because its a fun and its a quick way to get creative, and because making mini quilts is surprisingly satisfying. In this month of mini quilts you will find links to free online patterns and tutorials, and generally all things mini and quilty.

some wicked links here to get you rolling - addiction forming...
