love

I went to see 500 Days of Summer all by my-self the other day! By the time I wait for someone to come with me to a movie - it's usually about to come out on dvd. Anyhow I went in with my small popcorn and lemonade and I laughed and cried for the next 1 & 1/2 hours.

You know the saying some people come into your life for a reason, a season and a lifetime? Well that's what hit home with me. Everyone that crosses my path leaves a mark - no matter how long or short the stay.

I loved it! It was awkward, cute, quirky and the music references made me smile (I LOVE THE SMITHS). I'm a big fan of Ms Zooey Deschanel, don't get me wrong BUT she does play the aloof kinda arrogant girl very well....

Great soundtrack - The Smiths, The Pixies and of course Zooey (She & Him).

See the trailer here

I didn't make it to the launch last night for Gemma, Nat, Miikel and Eamo's look at the fading history of the milkbar, laundromat and urban beauty. We will make a trip out to see it REAL soon. I so loved that they had 20c lollies and sunnyboys! Classic.

mixtapeZINE is very proud to be a part of

Telling Australia that Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are hitting our shores.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are a three-piece band comprising the teenage siblings of the Durham family. Their music is influenced heavily by R&B, swing, jump blues, country and Western, blues, Hawaiian and rock 'n' roll. They are all multi-instrumentalists playing guitar, piano, banjo, lapsteel guitar, harmonica, double bass, ukulele, drums, trombone, xylophone and accordion between them.

I first heard these guys early last year when a good mate of ours Ro sent us a link.
Check out their first single here.

Loves and Hates

This week the intern is loving:

  • The Impossible Project: Sadly instant Polaroid film is no longer being manufactured, from this upsetting fact spurred The Impossible Project. They are a bunch of smarty pants people trying to, quiet successfully, redesign and manufacture instant film for the future!
  • Moss graffiti: How very eco, I’m cooking up some for myself with this recipe.

    Ingredients:
-1 can of beer (or 12 oz yoghurt)
    -1/2 tsp sugar

-Several clumps of garden moss (found in damp, shady places)

    1. Rip the moss into small chunks, blend with sugar and beer (or yoghurt)
    until smooth and creamy.

    2. Find an appropriate location (fairly moist without too much sun).

    3. Using a stencil or freehand, paint your design.

    4. Over the next 2–3 weeks revisit the spot and spray-mist your design with water.

    5. Watch your green design grow!

  • Bakelite kitchen canisters: I don’t use them for kitchen storage I use them on my desk! They are just too lovely for the kitchen! Please don’t outbid me on eBay!

  • Beautiful Kate: painfully beautiful new Australian film.

  • Craft Talk video: Leslie hall is creating these tongue in cheek Internet music videos, this one is for us crafty people! She also loves Gem sweaters!

Is not loving:

  • Sudoku game cube: Also known as the evil half brother of the evil Rubik’s cube, but worse.

Big love from the Intern

Loves and Hates

This week the Intern is loving:

  • Knitta: Knitta is a small group of ladies and a boy who ‘graffiti’ knitted fabrics on public items such as street signs, monuments, and utility poles.

  • Casio calculator watches: I was the child at school who was busy looking out the window or doodling pictures, so grammar and math bewilder me, so I thank god for spell check and this watch.

  • The Weather: The Intern is using the 'slightly' warmer weather as an excuse to buy some new cute dresses, shorts and a jumpsuit from Rummage Style.

  • Locally designed and printed fabrics: Oh how very patriotic of me! My very very favorites are Lara Cameron and Bianca van Meeuwen (Hollabee).

Intern is not loving:

  • Random acts of hair: Finding a hair in her fancy meal at a fancy expensive restaurant.

  • Pests: Aphids annihilating her cauliflower plants. Can anyone help me with this?

Big Intern love xxxx

and the winner is...

All you needed to do was write in (the comments) and tell us what Family means to you. I was so impressed with all the comments left and I only wish I had a book to give everyone who left one. I will be publishing some of the comments of this competition in Issue 11 of mixtapezine - I will be reviewing this book also.

So the winner is:

Family, to me, means warmth, happiness, security & unconditional love. Family should be what you can retreat to when it all gets too much and what you can enjoy every day. Family CAN be chosen, in spite of what people say. I have never felt the bonds & joy of family so much as I do now, when there are only 3 of us in it!
