Ok so issue 12 has hit the street! Any thoughts? Likes/Dislikes?
Now I have a couple of cool things to share with you.
Firstly one of mixtapes writers from the get go Ms Kylie Robson has written a cute kitsch article on her love of Tea Cosys! She knits a mean one!! Kylie has kindly donated her "Aster" Tea Cosy pattern to mixtape readers - it is not a beginner pattern but we encourage you all to give it a try! Please be sure to email us when you do get around to knitting one!
PDF here
One of our now regular sections "Sweet As" has even more lure - We will be giving away all the cool things mentioned in this section. I have uploaded the PDF so you can see whats on offer in Issue 12. All you need to do is join our e-newsletter email list here.

packing for post (Issue 12 has left the building)

On Saturday we had a production line happening here at mixtapezine headquarters. Two of my girlfriends and I spent about 3 hours packing, stamping & checking all pre-sales, subscriptions, promo and retail orders for Issue 12.

We've all worked for record companies back in the day so we are not shy when it comes to mass mailouts - what with good company, some food and loud music - who wouldn't want to come and help out?

Our lounge room became the postal room for the day and we couldn't see the couch by the end of it!
Thanks to all who have ordered Issue 12 so far - please allow 5 days (AUS) and 10 days (O/S) to get your order. If you do not have it after that please email me and I will chase up asap.
The Kids Issue (April 18) is nearly ready to go to the proof reader - you know a girl has gotta keep her self occupied right up until baby wants to meet the world, hey?

Craft Books Revisited Part 1
I thought I would do a bit of series on the various craft books that you can regularly find in op shops, garage sales, second hand shops etc and which ones I like and why.
First up is the Australian Women's Weekly 'Home Library' series.

For anyone who is familiar with their cookbooks these are essentially they same sort of thing but covering all sorts of different crafts. I currently have 4, two kids titles, one on general crafts and one on needlework. I used to have more but must have destashed them at some point.
The layout of these books is well done and although the project instructions are sometimes on the lean side the photos/illustrations more than make up for it.
The kids titles are jammed packed full of great ideas such as simple puppets

kiddy printing and sewing ideas

ideas that could also translate to home deco stuff as well as kids stuff, I've seen similar 'string balloons' used as light shades

To some slighting more wacky ideas like 'fish printing' (I don't think this fish phobic person will be trying this one)

The adult titles have a similar range of variety (although the styling has definitely not held up as well over time, anyone for a ladies hand embroidered sailor collar?)
and includes stuff like soft toys and bean bag patterns

To basket weaving, hat making, stained glass and linocuts.
Because they are soft cover magazine style book they will rarely cost you more that a couple of dollars in the op shop. When hunting for them don't just look in the craft book section as they can also often be found hiding in with the magazines or the similar shaped cookbooks.
Although the styling can sometimes be a bit dated they are packed with great ideas, that are clearly explained using generally easy to find materials.
They also don't take up too much space on my already groaning craft shelf.

New Product in the Shop
I've imported a small amount of these ace School Years keep safe boxes. I purchased one late last year and just love it. I wish my ma had kept something like this when I was growing up!
They will tie in nicely with the mixtape KIDS edition out APRIL 18. Although they may all be gone by then...

New Magazine in Australia

The rockin' Outre Gallery has just informed us of a new magazine. We love Atomic Ranch in this household and now we have an Aussie magazine " Brisbane MODERN". YAY!! I have put the first 3 issues on hold at the gallery and can't wait to get my mits on them.
i heart patchwork - 21 irrestistable zakka patchwork projects to sew
My two most favourite craft books ever would have to be
Machine Made Patchworks 1&2
I just received I heart Patchwork in the mail and I must say even on one flick through it may just be up there with Machine Made Patchworks 1&2!
So many ace projects - beautifully shot, great fabrics used. My first project from the book will be the patchwork ball for our impending arrival!!
Have you got this book? Have you made anything from it yet?
************
Speaking of peoples thoughts - Andi a fellow crafter friend opened up an interesting debate on this post. I absolutely ADORE my local fabric store and purchase most of my stash from them. However things need to change here in Australia with the price difference on fabric - which makes us all go and have a look and purchase from o/s. What can we do to help out the local retailer??

new music - surfer blood

SPUNK! have just released the debut album from Surfer Blood. These four early-twenties lads call West Palm Beach, Florida home, and in 2009 penned an album of catchy, summery indie songs that even the most hook-laden power pop band would rightfully be jealous of.
