We commissioned Shannon to do the first ever cover, Shannon went on to draw for each and every issue.

Mixtapezine was a craft zine that was first published in August 2007. Started by myself & Nichola, it ran for 3 1/2 years and we produced 15 issues. We based our idea on the US craft zine CROQ There was not alot out in the market place when we started BUT now there is sooooo much goodness. Over the coming months I will be loading up back Issues of mixtapezine to share with you all. Although it is no longer published I think it‘s important that it remains as a part of history.

Enjoy the timelessness of them all.

We have decided to finish up completely and not produce another issue, making the current issue 14 our last.

There is so much crafty awesomeness out there now and with a new baby on board in this household and the death of my father in October, we can no longer give mixtape the attention it deserves.

mixtapezine has been a labour of love from the get go (2007) and you, our loyal subscribers, retailers & advertisers have kept the magazine going.

Thanks a BUNCH, it has been a TRIP! I will be sure to keep you informed on the next venture we embrace.

meeralee was going to be a feature artist in our next issue, and as we are not doing another issue I'd like to share her work with you on our blog!

In her own words:

Hi! I’m Meeralee, an east-coast artist and illustrator currently residing in New Jersey. When I was young and a smaller version of myself, I would happily spend my time writing short stories and accompanying them with wild illustrations—my imagination roamed uncontrollably, as it still does years later.

As I grew older, my desires to ingest all the beauty around me and spit it back out in a different form only increased. I was determined to make the world inside of me into something more tangible: something other people could see and feel and hold.

Years later, I am still the same little lady who loves to get lost inside her own head. My illustrations are always lined with a tangible magic: fashion illustrations that combine plants and animals, ladies who take root with the earth, tiny birds that will follow you everywhere.

The more I illustrate, the more I find myself tempted to transform everything into watercolor and ink—words, feelings, atmospheres, as deep as the mind can go. As a freelance illustrator, I aspire to draw everything: fashion, music, politics, literature.

How AWESOME to be included in this amazing book. Teal contacted me aged ago to see if we were happy to be included - HAPPY alright! This book traces the history of fanzines from the beginning through to today.

From the earliest examples created by sci-fi fans in the 1930s, now incredibly rare, the book takes us through the decades. Superhero comics inspired a flush of zines in the 1950s and ’60s. In the 1970s, the DIY aesthetic of punk was forged in fanzines such as Sniffin’ Glue and Search and Destroy, while the ’80s saw political protest zines as well as rave and street style. The Riot Grrrl movement of the ’90s gave voice to a defiant new generation of feminists, while the arrival of the internet saw many fanzines make the transition to online.

So our first ever cover done by Shannon and Issue 6's cover done by Mandy. That seems like a nice way to wrap up mixtape being in such great company!

It's been a tough month here in the mixtape home. But finally I have my time management skills in check. Issue 14 is out now - hitting our retail stores as I write.

Issue 14 has a couple of super cool interviews with Kelley Deal & Boo Davis.

The countdown is on -- we have one more issue out (early 2011) before we call it a day. We hope you enjoy the last couple of issues and we thank you for your on going support.

Kelley Deal's 'Road' Bag

Have you seen Kelley Deal's book, Bags That Rock? It is all about knitting bags and has lots of super ace projects in it.

First bag I decided to tackle was Road.

I used some Fibreworks 8 ply merino held double throughout. It is a very quick knit on large needles, knit all in the round.

Once knit and after attaching some D rings that I salvaged from a particularly ugly belt it was time to felt. It is better to felt your knitted items in an environment that you can control. A top loading washing machine is great as it is fast and you can easily check the progress and fish it out when ready. I however only have a front loader. Never one to let something like this stop me I just chucked it in and hoped for the best. I even let it go through the spin cycle at 1200rpm. And the results were perfect!

The original bag suggests using the inseam from an old pair of jeans as the strap. For once I wanted to keep fairly true to the original, so although I didn't have an old pair of jeans to hand I did have an old mini skirt. So what was a waistband is now a bag strap.

In true lazy fashion, I have used the existing button/buttonhole and added one of each extra at each end and then buttoned the strap onto the bag. This also means it is completely removable.

Although it is a little smaller than the version in the book (thanks to the front loader) it is one one of those bags that is a lot bigger than it looks. I can fit keys, wallet, sunnies, kid snacks and a knitting project with room to spare. THe only thing I would do if knitting it again is mark my pocket placement a little better. Taking the time to do this properly while knitting would have saved me a bit of grief later.

After finding some deep red mohair in the stash I think I'll tackle 'Heart' next

Have you ever wondered what goes on in other people's homes? This exhibition explores the role of Womens' craft as part of and related to the home. It is held at the home of curator and crafter, Cate Lawrence. As a creative practice, craft is obscured by its residential location as it is traditionally not done in art spaces, studios or collectives. It is not held in a high regard as other creative mediums such as graphic design, painting and sculpture.

The works span embroidery, sewing, gocco, quilting, jewellery making, ceramics and textiles arts as traditional craft techniques are reinterpreted for a contemporary audience. Wander through Cate's home and see the inspiring work of many wonderfully creative women.

The Sunday openings include a pop up backyard craft market.

A not for profit organisation thats started to help independent designers and artists to sell their wares.

This market was started up to help the locals have a ‘upmarket’ type market, instead of having to travel a long distance.

Kylie from Blue Ginger Designs and Mark from Nimble Jack started the idea and were bombarded by a huge response and formed a small group consisting of: Kathryn from Our Shabby Cottage, Pia from Arahant, Bianca from Marbia Studios and Rachel from MissIsa to help with the organising.

Book Review: Quilt it with wool.

I am not usually one to judge a book by it's cover but those beautifully buttery yellow woollen hexagons sucked me in straight away. Quilt it with Wool, as the title suggests is gorgeous little collection of projects that all include a nod to quilting and the use of woollen fabrics.

It is divided into three main sections, carry, wear, live, plus a very detailed introductory section covering quilting, choosing materials, basic tools, binding and how to clean and store wool.

INTRODUCTORY SECTION

It starts with a detailed description of the various components required when quilting, this is followed by a very useful description of some of the various types of wool fabrics available. Other fabrics, threads and embellishments are also discussed. Basic skills that relate to the projects to come are covered and there is a very detailed description on how to bind a quilted project. Then after a paragraph on how to store wool it is into the projects.

CARRY

Not surprisingly this section is all about bags, pouches and baskets. There are nine projects ranging from a beautifully shaped handbag to various pouches to hold glasses, makeup, chocolate and a laptop. There is also a makeup brush holder, a quilted cube shaped basket and a large carry bag.

WEAR

Six projects make up this section, a scarf, earrings, a muff, a quilted belt, a cape and a cute little hooded baby quilt.

LIVE

Another ten projects make up this section which focuses predominately on homewares. There are quilts, mobiles, table runners, cushions, hot holders, a door snake, hot water bottle cover, covered footstool and a journal cover.

Different projects incorporate different techniques including hand stitching, applique, Trapunto, felting, embellishment, embroidery and variations on traditional quilting. Some of the projects use upcycled materials like the hot waterbottle cover made from and old waistcoat

or the various options for using felted woolen jumpers or blankets. The pictures are beautiful and the diagrams clear however at times the instructions are a little limited. I suspect this is due more to a lack of space than anything else.

All relevant templates are included in the back of the book and can be photocopied as required. They are clearly labeled so it is quick and easy to see which template goes with with project and how big (if at all) you need to enlarge it when copying.

Mini bio's on each of the designers is also included at the back, including blog addresses, where I'm sure you will recognise some names.

Overall, although this book didn't wow me with it's projects there are still plenty of things I can see myself making and the ideas it has given me for different things to do with woolen fabrics more than makes up for it. The detail in the introductory section would make it suitable for someone who has never quilted or worked with wool before and the projects present enough fresh ideas/techniques/features to keep the more experienced happy too.

Trying to work out what “craft project” we could provide for The Trip (RRR Subscriber magazine) readers, turned out to be more fun than I first thought.

We were going to do a cushion tutorial or a zipper purse tutorial, but they just weren’t sitting right.

Simon suggested a plush voodoo doll – we laughed – we bantered around for a bit more and I suggested a Henry Wagons Doll. I emailed Henry and he wrote back and said, “Awesome!” So off we went...

After taking a long time to think about things and after talking to people close to us, we have decided to finish up the printed version of mixtapezine this October 2010.
What began as a cool little idea early 2007 grew and grew and grew and grew. It has become so much more than we ever anticipated. That is because of the craft community that embraced mixtape with open arms.

mixtape has been a labour of love from the get go and has been worth every single minute that has been pored into it over the past 3 years.
With a new baby on board in our household and the plethora of crafty goodness EVERYWHERE now – we have decided to go out on a HIGH!

Issue 13 will be out August 16 (FINALLY) thanks to everyone for your patience on this issue (it’s been a tough one).
Issue 14 out October 18 will be our last printed issue and
Issue 15 out Dec 6 will be a MEGA last issue ever of mixtape – in a PDF version only.

This is such a sad and yet exciting time - I have poured my heart & soul into mixtape and have learn't so much along the way.

The Edmonds cookbook - it's been the New Zealand family cooking bible for 90 odd years and has seen over 50 new editions, perfect for simple scones and pikelets, a tattered and torn spiral bound copy has been in my Mum's kitchen since as long as I can remember. Maggie's Harvest by Maggie Beer is a beautifully designed and written cookbook filled with hundreds of pages of useful cooking tips and delicious recipes. It comes wrapped in a lovely embroidered cover and it's extra special too me as it was a gift from some of my favorite friends.

Q4. Two CD's that would travel to a desert island with you

I would ask my boyfiend Mike and my friend Armeda to make me a mixtape each: they both have great, albeit quite different, tastes so I'd leave it in their capable hands.

Q5. Where do you like to SURF on the net

I like to scour ebay and etsy for vintage clothes and knick knacks, and I also spend a fair bit of my spare time checking out cooking and design blogs for inspiration.

The crazy bunch of people known to me collectively as friends and family, Good music, Good Wine, Italian Food and a Gas stovetop.

That it grew from a laser printed zine into the quality publication it is today gaining a dedicated following along the way. Something to aspire to.

Cook books are my weakness - and I can spend hours getting inspiration for a gourmet dinner that usually ends up as scrambled eggs. My Stephanie Alexander 'Cooks companion' for essential cooking advice. And Martha Stewart's 'Baking' - so decadent - the croissant recipe works every time.

We made a series of music mixes when we were married and gave them out to guests as presents. I love listening to new music but I still really enjoy the old faves - a mixture of melancholy jazz ladies and experimental 70's German music and a few pop classics too.

Oh man - net surfing can suck your brain and your time - I have a zillion blogs on my blog reader, but for pure surfing rather than research I try to stick to my limited regime - the sites I go back to regularly are soulemama for parenting and family inspiration, etsy for retail therapy and TED for life changing inspiration.

Who is behind mixtape?
Me, Justine Telfer - just your average 30 something chick who wanted to create a craft/lifestyle magazine that I would want to read. I love the online craft community and wanted everyone to be able to experience it the good old fashion way ( in hard copy form). I am hugely influenced by BUST magazine and CROQzine.

What is mixtape?
mixtape is a self published magazine. It's a collision of art/craft and pop culture kitsch. It is written by everyday crafters for everyday crafters.
It is put together in our humble Melbourne abode. We are a husband and wife team with a handful of regular writers and a selection of different contributors every issue. We rely on YOU to get involved to keep us moving forward.

How long has mixtape been going?
mixtape has been going since August 2007. My friend and I started it out as a small photocopied zine, sold a shit load - progressed to a laser printer from Issue 2- printed and collated each and every issue up until Issue 8 where we outsourced the printing to keep up with the demand. We do ONE print run of 2000.

How often does mixtape come out?
mixtape is published roughly every quarter! We do ONE print run of 2000. It is packed all from home and posted with love!

Where can I buy mixtape ?

Can you subscribe to mixtape?
YES you can! In fact that is what keeps us going.

Amber the chick of many talents (kids craft weekly being one) is now working for Save the Children.
They've been running a project called Knit One Save One over the past few months where they asked the community to knit squares to create blankets for babies in India where hypothermia is a major problem.

The have amassed more than 80,000 knitted squares which are piled up in every corridor of their office – very colourful and inspiring!

They need of people in Melbourne to volunteer to sew or crochet these squares together to make the blankets.Can you help?

I’m on a mission to slowly convert my wardrobe into exclusively handmade only, so I know that learning to knit is going to be on the cards at some point, but I doubt any other discipline could become as essential to my well-being as sewing!    

Q3. Two books you can't live without  == ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ by Hunter S Thompson is the only book I’ve ever read more than once. I love its unremitting energy. But I’d say probably the instruction booklet for my overlocker gets the most use round here.   

Q4. Two CD's that would travel to a desert island with you  == I’d make a couple of compilations with masses of hiphop and soul plus some rock and latino stuff on there, including lots of The Roots and Queens of the Stone Age.   

Q5. Where you like to SURF on the net == I have an extreme number of (predominantly sewing) blogs I try to keep up with, plus Burdastyle, Etsy and so so much more.  

Q6 5 things you can't live without == I hate to admit it, but probably these days my laptop, decaff coffee and (at risk of sounding like a broken record) my sewing machine.

The most excellent Faythe Levine is working on a new doco called "The Sign Painter Movie".
The documentary is about sign painters in America. Those who were and still are walking the streets and using their talent to get a message across. You see their work daily on windows, sandwich-boards, boats, cars, billboards, in businesses, playgrounds, farmers markets and even theme parks to name a handful of spots. Who are these people? Where did they learn their trade and is it a dying craft?

Have you seen her first documentary "Handmade Nation"? We have a few left in stock - it's a MUST HAVE in my humble opinion.

Handmade Beginnings by Anna Maria Horner - Book Review

At first glance I wasn't too excited by this book, purely because we have no plans for anymore babies in this house. Apart from the odd gift I assumed there wouldn't be anything I would want to make. That was until I actually looked at the projects and realised just how wrong I was.

The book is divided into 5 chapters, beginning with a very brief introductory chapter that quickly discusses sewing tools, fabric choices, taking measurements etc, then it is straight into the projects.

Chapter one is all about sewing for the mum to be. Projects include a nice roomy bag, slippers, a thankyou notebook and a range of cleverly designed maternity pieces that are suitable for all stages of pregnancy and post birth breastfeeding. With Anna Maria's guidance you can even make them for everyday wear without a baby bump in sight. I can definitely see myself making the wrap around style tunic.

The next chapter is about baby clothes. Including a super sweet pair of booties, pants designed for easy nappy/diaper changes, a sleeping bag/sack, a dress and a jacket. The great thing about these designs is that apart from the dress, they are all unisex.

The next chapter is what Anna Maria calls family sewing. this is acknowledging that a new baby involves and is celebrated by the whole family. Projects range from some super cute thankyou notes to a baby dolls set to help older siblings adjust. There is also a dad friendly messenger style nappy/diaper bag and a quilt which makes a feature of dresden plates and is large enough for the whole family to sit on.

The final chapter is all about the nursery. Here you will find patchwork toys such as stacking cubes and a mother hen and her chicks and decorator items like a nap pillow, a mobile and wall letters. There is also two more quilts. One a play quilt and one a cot/crib sized quilt.

The book, like her first, is well laid out and progresses naturally from one project to the next. It is not aimed at beginners, in that it devotes virtually no space to the mechanics of how to sew, but that is not to say a beginner could not successfully tackle some of the projects.
Notes are given on colour and fabric choices for each project and numerous clear diagrams support the instructions. The photography is stunning and as mentioned earlier there are lots of projects to make even if you don't have a baby on the way. it would be also quite easy to simplify a lot of the projects and still get a great result if time was a little short.

My only wish is that for some of the projects more photographs would have been helpful. For example pictures of the insides of the bags to show compartments, pockets etc and an extra shot of the wrap dress/tunic to illustrate how it wraps.

Full size pattern pieces are included in a pocket at the back on sturdy paper, however you will need to trace these off the use them as they overlap on the pages.

Final verdict is a great book regardless of whether there is a baby around or not. I really want to make the wrap tunic and my husband has been eyeing off the messenger bag. My daughter loves the doll set and there are enough nephews/nieces around to benefit as well.

I spent the other weekend at the Stitches and Craft Show in Melbourne. I volunteered on the the knitting and crochet craft bar where I spent my time helping people with quick little projects to make and take away. I also spent a lot of that time helping new knitters/crocheters and chatting to those that have been doing it for years. Over the course of the weekend I began to realise just how many crafters had never heard of Ravelry, or if they had, had not yet joined. So what is Ravelry and why should you join?

Ravelry is an online knitting and crochet community. It also has lots of great stuff for spinners, weavers and dyers. It is a place where you can share projects, find patterns or yarns, get help with a project and just hang out with like minded souls from all over the world and have a chat. However that barely scratches the surface of the fabulousness of Ravelry.

Wondering what to do with that stray ball of yarn that you have had hiding in the stash for years because you can't think what to make. Look it up in the yarn directory and see what others have used it for to get ideas.

Have seen a pattern that you love but you want to use a different yarn than specified. Look up the pattern in he directory and see who else has made it and with what yarns. You also get to see it modeled by real people as they add photos to your project page. It helps you get an idea of how your finished project might look.

You're having trouble with a particular pattern and need some help? Do a search of the forums to see if anyone else has had the same problem, post a question asking or help or better yet look up the designer and send them a message.

Have a favourite pattern designer? Add them to you list of friends so it is easy to keep track of what they are making.

You also get access to peoples opinions on patterns and yarns, ideas, modifications and tips for various patterns by looking through peoples project pages as well as an endless almost overwhelming supply of inspiration.

On top of all this lots of your favourite yarn stores will have a group on Raverly which you can join. Some may post specials exclusive to that group or give you the heads up when they are restocking there online store.

So if you haven't already joined I highly recommend that you do. To gain access you will need to create an account which is quick, easy and free to do so, then you are all set to create your own profile, add your own projects, upload you stash and hang out with fibre obsessed people from all over the globe.

WAGONS & THOSE DARLINS EAST COAST STAMPEDE!
Both bands are holding hands and warming us up this winter with some hot, hot shows.
Wagons performances have become legendary; there aren’t many bands who
can live up to the veracity and vivaciousness of a Wagons live show. Not many, that is, aside from Those Darlins...

Nashville’s Those Darlins take the pop, country and rock and roll of their hometown and spin it into something fresh and totally new – pop songs with Southern charm and a DIY punk-rock mentality. Their Dolly Parton style sing-a-long choruses are perfectly matched to the bravado and swagger of Wagons.

After recently meeting the Darlins in the US, Wagons are confident they have met their live music match. To say this tour will be entertaining is an understatement.

We'll be at the Melbourne gig and we have a couple of tickets to give away also. I will announce the comp later in the week.

I love to write, to take photos, and to make things. I have little idea of what I am doing in any of these three endeavours, but whatever paths my life has taken me down, I have always come back to writing, taking photos and making things.

This changes depending on mood, but knitting and quilting remain my two big loves.

Q3. Two books you can't live without
Just two? That’s painful, and would probably be a different two depending on which day I answered it. Today it would be Foods That Fight Cancer by Richard Beliveau and Denis Gingras, which is admittedly a seriously odd choice, particularly given that I neither have cancer nor am a food scientist. Nevertheless I just love the idea of food as medicine and never get sick of re-reading this book. My second choice would be a big fat poetry anthology. Any would do.

Q4. Two CD's that would travel to a desert island with you
My new Natalie Merchant CD, Leave Your Sleep. She has put 19th century poetry to music and I just love it. The second would be a mixtape of my favourite angst-ridden ballads, all written in a minor key. I like my music sad. I have no idea why.

Q5. Where you like to SURF on the net
Everywhere. I am a very well travelled surfer. I keep coming back to see what new lectures are on the TED site every few weeks or so, and the haunt the edges of Flickr, but otherwise I just travel where the waves take me.

Q6 5 things you can't live without
Tea, books, tea, tomatoes, and tea.

Q7 One thing you love about mixtape
Watching this magazine grow over the last few years has been so amazing. It’s all great, and I have a special love for the concept of ‘ordinary’ people coming together to share their wisdom and creativity with each other. The covers always rock too.

Craft Books Revisited Part 3 - Readers Digest Complete Guides

I recently pulled my Readers Digest complete guides off the shelf again I had forgotten just how fantastic these books are. They truly are comprehensive guides with excellent and numerous illustrations. They are clearly and simply written and have fantastic step by step instructions to help you learn new techniques and skills.

If you new to sewing or needlework these guides will help answer all those questions that everyone else seems to already know the answer to. They will also provide you with lots of clear examples and help bring you up to speed on terminology and how to use various craft specific gadgets.

These guides have been revised and reprinted numerous times and it is possible to buy copies new. However because they have been reprinted so many times it also means that they regularly turn up in op shops and second hand books stores. They can also be found on Ebay, however the postage can be hefty as they are big heavy books.

I am an Attention Deficient Crafter, so I couldn't possibly pick one. It's
a known phenomenon, you know, I even started an Association for it. I dabble
in many crafts and my favourite changes often. At the moment it's a toss
up between sewing and crochet.

Anything by Banana Yoshimoto and any of the Harry Potter series.

Q4. Two CD's that would travel to a desert island with you
Oh no, only two? That's not fair, I think I'd have to smuggle my Ipod onto
the island. Alright, I'll choose The Specials, Best Of to encourage happy
dancing and PJ Harvey Stories from the City Stories from the Sea.

Q5. Where you like to SURF on the net
My bloglines still never fails to deliver me endless hours of clicking adventures
and I also love losing myself in Whip Up.

Family, Friends, good food, music and something crafty to occupy my thoughts
and hands.

I love that mixtape started in Australia. When I first started blogging,
there
wasn't a whole lot of craft blogging happening in Australia so it's exciting
to see influential voices like Mixtape bringing the global craft world together
from an Australian base. Plus that Justine lady, she's one rockin'lady.

Kids Issue Action

Tori Higa is a Stationary Designer from the USA. She kindly donated some of her art for the Kids Issue. Molly and I made her up today.

I scanned the page and enlarged it to fit on an A4 sheet. We then printed it out on 200gsm paper and cut the doll and her clothes out. I think the best thing to do is re-print the clothes on thinner paper so the doll sits upright!

I also play roller derby with the newly formed South Sea Roller Derby league, and I'm also a coach and Media Rep, so it keeps me busy beyond belief. I studied Fine Art in my 20's and though I rarely get to work on my own practice any more, I still love going to exhibitions, especially of emerging artists. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - B-sides& Rarities, and Lucinda Williams - Car wheels on a Gravel Road should cover all moods

Ravelry is my favourite surf-break cos I can spend hours being taken on new tangents craft-wise and find inspiration every single visit.

My daughter - the beautiful Lily-girl; my knitting, natch; my skates are almost permanently attached to my feet too, music is ever-present - 3RRR is my soul, and yoga puts that crazy, hectic mess above all into a grounded perspective!

Of course, my editor is #1 ;) but I also love that I have been involved since the first issue and have watched this gem of an amazing idea grow and grow into the fantastic publication it is today. I love that it brings together all types of people and ideas, and that there is something for everyone in each and every issue.

Today whilst looking for a bag pattern searching through tubs of STUFF! I found some Angelique Houtkamp cards that I bought from Outre years ago. So I popped 'em in a couple of frames I had lying around and I got my fix!!

Also in the mail today I received my VERY OWN Morgan Wills Bushka Doll.
Now let me say the quality is second to none - just divine. Her name is Maushka Bushka. She loves maple syrup and dancing - her babies name is Bushka and she loves lullabies - cuuuuuutttte!!!!

Mini Quilts have been around for over 100 years, and served a couple of different purposes. They were a fun way for young girls to learn how to sew, sewing simple quilt designs for their dolls. They also were also a great educational tool that mothers and grandmothers could make for their children and grandchildren – these often had letters or motifs appliqued or embroidered onto them. Mini quilts are still made today, as teaching/learning tools and as play things. And now added to these two uses comes a third – as pieces of contemporary art.

In this month of April, WHIP UP will be showcasing various artists who work with mini quilts as their main medium, as well as makers and quilters who just happen to make mini quilts because they can, because its a fun and its a quick way to get creative, and because making mini quilts is surprisingly satisfying. I was checking out blogs a few weeks ago and Gina had written about this book. I quickly went to etsy and purchased a copy. I love love Machine Made patchwork 1&2 and this one could easily be Machine Made Patchwork 3! Thanks for the link Gina.
